ABOUT

ABOUT US

Founded in 2014, The Oakland Police Canine Association was established to support the needs of the Oakland Police Department (OPD) Canine Unit. Our mission is to protect the community and its police officers by training and using canine teams to locate criminal suspects and evidence. Our canine teams assist in narcotic detection, search and rescue, explosive detection and criminal apprehension.

The OPD Association is a nonprofit organization comprised of canine officers and handler teams along with supportive residents of the Oakland community that serve as executive board advisors.

In addition, the OPD Canine Association promotes the use of the Police Service Dog in the community by providing interaction with the public through demonstrations and education.

Being a canine handler is not only a labor of love but also a calling. Our canine officers are not kenneled at the police department, instead, they live with their handlers and become a part of their family. At the age of retirement, the OPD will release each canine officer to their handlers to live out their lives comfortably.

Heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place.
